Our nature and wine tour visits the oldest part of Auckland’s rainforest, historic wineries and a stunning West Coast black sand beach. We have tastings at 2 wineries and lunch at one of those. The rainforest walk is through stunning native forest on easy walking tracks by a stream.
We will pick you up from your Auckland accommodation in one of our Mercedes vehicles and a short (35min) drive takes us to an area of rainforest which has the oldest trees left in this part of Auckland. Your guide will introduce you to NZ nature including an 800 year old Kauri tree and our iconic Silver Ferns. This area of forest has been protected since the 1920’s so it is a very rich forest. On our walk, as well as talking about the forest we’ll be looking for NZ birds such as Tūi and Kererū. This area of the rainforest is also home to some traditional Māori carvings and your guide will talk about them and explain their significance for the area
Our next stop is at Soljans winery for a wine tasting and lunch (which includes a glass of wine). Soljans is a family owned winery which was started in 1937 and has a wide variety of wines on offer, the restaurant at Soljans serves fresh seasonal local produce and never fails to impress.
A short drive takes us to our second winery – Westbrook winery has one of NZ’s top winemakers and our tasting there is overlooking the picturesque grounds and vineyards. Westbrook wines were started in 1935 and make a range of award winning wines.
Our final stop of the day is at the black sand beach at Muriwai where the rugged Tasman Sea crashes ashore at one of Auckland’s leading surf spots. We get great coastal views which extend for miles along the beach. From August to April you also have the chance to see one of the world’s largest seabirds in their natural environment. A short walk takes you to within feet of one of the few mainland gannet nesting sites in the world situated on the cliff-tops overlooking the Tasman Sea.
Your guide is with you all day to make sure you get the most out of your day and answer any questions about NZ you may have.
